Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (June 24, 1842 –1914) was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist, and satirist. He wrote the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and compiled a satirical lexicon, The Devil's Dictionary. His vehemence as a critic, his motto "Nothing matters", and the sardonic view of human nature that informed his work, all earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce".
Despite his reputation as a searing critic, Bierce was known to encourage younger writers, including poet George Sterling and fiction writer W. C. Morrow. Bierce employed a distinctive style of writing, especially in his stories. His style often embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, impossible events, and the theme of war.
In 1913, Bierce traveled to Mexico to gain first-hand experience of the Mexican Revolution. He was rumored to be traveling with rebel troops, but was not seen again.

The collected works of Ambrose Bierce, Volume 2, is a great value and full of good stories. This particular volume contains two of my very favorite short stories; "An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge" and "A Horseman In The Sky".If one has never heard of Ambrose Bierce, and I have never heard anyone in my circles mention him, try this volume and try those two stories. I do not absolutely love everything he has written, but I find much of his work to be extremely compelling. I lack the expertise to understand how some authors reach iconic status and remain well known, while others become forgotten. But as far as I can tell, Ambrose Bierce falls in the later category. As far as I am concerned, at his best he compares with Edgar Allen Poe. However one remains at the forefront of American Literature and the other seems largely forgotten.

Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce Religião e Filosofia edition by Ambrose Bierce AUTCH Editora Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Great writing and great book. It arrived as scheduled and in the condition advertised.
I truly enjoyed reading nearly every story in this collection. The majority of them created a yearning for another. I love the wording & twists. I'm back for more.
I really enjoy his writings. It is worth getting all of his individual collections to get the full picture of his collection. The stories are insightful and broad and I feel he was really ahead of his time.
The Civil War stories are excellent. History from someone who was there. Very enjoyable writing style. Amazing for someone who lived through a gun shot to the head.
I've been slowly working my way through the classics and through mysteries written in the 19th century. Mr Bierce has several choice stories that really caught my imagination.
Many tales well to!d. Bierce is to literature what the Twilight Zone was to early television. I consider An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge a masterpiece. But it represented just one of many quirky, well written in this collection well worth reading.
I first discovered Bierce through his Devil's Dictionary years ago. I liked his attitude & cynicism. I liked this collection in Volume 2 better than the first volume. In this one he talks more about the Civil War & what it did to people (him?). His descriptions of battles & conflicts adds another dimension to what that war did to individuals often missing in more historical writings. He writes in a style often missing in today's sound bite era. He was a complex person who went south to Mexico during the revolution to disappear there.
